At Garfield Primary School, it is our mission to ensure all students learn the necessary academic, social and emotional skills to become positive members of our community and society. All of our school's programs and efforts are solely focused on achieving this. We run daily literacy and numeracy sessions to ensure our students are surrounded by learning at all times, pitched at their point of need. This means that regardless of the ability level your child comes in with, we believe that we can enrich their learning experiences, enhance their outcomes and support them in becoming a well rounded, happy learner. Students are constantly engaging in literacy and numeracy tasks to develop the necessary skills required to become proficient, but to also develop critical thinking skills allowing them to evaluate, analyse, create and apply their learning in a variety of contexts.
To complement our focus on delivering a structured and explicit approach towards Literacy and Numeracy, our students engage in Investigations and Inquiry sessions throughout their learning week as well. During Investigations and Inquiry learning, students are provided with a structured, purposeful program that enables them to ask and investigate questions about topics that interest them.
Our inquiry and investigations sessions relate directly to the Victorian Curriculum in the areas of:
Students are provided with opportunities to develop their understanding of themselves and the world around them as they draw on prior knowledge, engage in new experiences and share their learning with others. By formulating questions, designing research, experimenting, observing and analyzing, students are supported to find their own responses to the issues they choose to explore.
