Sporting events

We are a very sporty community in Garfield and there are 4 main highlights on the sporting calendar for us at Garfield Primary School. These events are expertly organised by our Physical Education Teacher, Mrs Lauren Desiatov, and always run smoothly, creating many lasting memories for our students.

Swimming carnival

Our swimming carnival runs very early in Term One, when the weather is still nice and warm, at the local Garfield swimming pool. This day is always well attended by our parent community and a lot of fun for our students. All students have the opportunity to participate in some fun water-based games whilst Year 3-6 students also get the opportunity to compete in swimming races and qualify to represent the school at the District event. All students are competing to earn points for their house, with the winning house named at the conclusion of the events.

Athletics carnival

Our athletics carnival also runs in Term One at the Garfield Recreation Reserve. This day is also traditionally well attended by our parent community and is another fun day for everyone. Our Foundation to Year 2 students rotate through all sorts of fun activities. Some of these are traditional athletics events whilst some are slight variations that enable them to be successful and have fun. Our Years 3-6 students rotate through traditional track and field events and also get the opportunity to qualify to represent the school at the District event. Like our swimming carnival, students all compete to earn points for their house, with the winning house named at the conclusion of the events. A highlight of the day is always our staff versus student relay (that the students are yet to win!) with a parent relay team even participating this year!

Cross Country event

Our cross-country event typically takes place late in Term One or early in Term Two. This event takes place on-site at school, with students running or walking different courses and distances, depending on their age. Our Years 3-6 students again are competing to qualify for the District event with all students competing to earn points for their house.

Garfield Football League

The Garfield Football League is a round-robin tournament that takes place during Senior School Sport sessions throughout Term 3. Our Years 3-6 students are each assigned to one of 4 teams - the Dingoes, the Bats, the Redbacks and the Devils. Results are tallied up throughout the term to determine which 2 teams qualify for the Grand Final, which is help on the last day of Term Three and typically well attended by our parent community. This is always a highlight of the year for our footy-mad students with bragging rights on the line for the following 12 months!
