All students from Foundation to Year 6 participate in a weekly Auslan lesson with Ms Smith.
Learning a language broadens students’ communication skills and helps them develop a deeper understanding of language, culture and the ways we connect with others. It also builds respect for diversity and encourages students to appreciate different perspectives and experiences.
At Garfield Primary School, students learn to communicate using Auslan (Australian Sign Language) and develop an understanding of Deaf culture and the importance of inclusive communication. Wherever possible, our Auslan learning is also linked with other areas of the curriculum so that students can apply their skills in meaningful and authentic ways across their learning.
